Third Grade Judaic Studies

Hebrew Language Arts
The Hebrew language arts program includes reading, comprehension, oral and written expression, grammar and syntax. Emphasis is placed on fluency in reading, vocabulary development, oral and written comprehension skills, and composing sentences and paragraphs using correct grammar and syntax. Particular stress is placed on learning present and past tense verb forms. The Tal Sela language arts series is enriched with a variety of stories from classical Hebrew children's literature.

Torah Study
Third grade students study the biblical text of Genesis beginning with Parashat Lech-Lecha and ending with Parashat Vayishlach. Students learn to read the biblical text fluently, and become familiar with some of the common grammatical forms in the text. Explanations are given in simple Hebrew and students are encouraged to look for familiar root words to help them understand the meaning of words. Students are exposed to a variety of midrashim and commentaries. Students learn Jewish values through their study of the characters and their actions. Discussions take place with a view toward helping students understand these values within the context of their own lives.

Holidays
Students further their knowledge of the customs and traditions associated with the Jewish holiday observance outside of Israel. In addition, they learn how and when the holidays are celebrated in Israel. Arts and crafts, songs, and stories enrich their holiday study.

Prayer
Students in third grade join together with students in fourth and fifth grade for prayers in our Bet Midrash on Monday and Thursday mornings for Shacharit, and on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for Mincha. Students take turns leading the prayers and those who wish are given the opportunity to learn to read a few sentences from the Torah. Both the daily morning prayers and the daily afternoon prayers are learned.

Israel
Students "visit" Israel by studying her history, her geography (especially as connected to their study of Torah) and her culture.
