Second Grade General Studies

"I love second grade, but the best thing I like is our D.E.A.R. time when I get to pick the book I want to read!"
Language Arts
In second grade, children are exposed to a variety of literature through individual reading, group sharing and integrated curriculum studies. This year we are using a new literature program, the Houghton Mifflin Reading Series: A Legacy of Literacy, comprised of award-winning literature that meets different instructional needs. Students will continue to acquire word attack skills through phonics and spelling. Emphasis is placed on reading for meaning, through book discussions and book reports. Students will become more fluent readers through silent reading when they choose their own books during daily D.E.A.R. time, as well as through oral reading in small groups or partnerships, and listening to texts read aloud. Genre study is incorporated as well through the use of popular well-known trade books. Second graders enjoy writing to share their ideas and to experiment with language. Writing skills are developed by focusing on individual interests, creative writing projects, and class units in science and social studies. At the end of second grade, The Terra Nova, a national assessment, is given.

Math
The second grade Everyday Mathematics program is a well-balanced curriculum that emphasizes numeration and computation. Geometry, data and algebraic thinking are included as well. The children also engage in many hands-on activities using clocks, calendars, thermometers and number lines. To reinforce the concepts taught throughout the year, games and puzzles are learned that afford the children the opportunity to work in a variety of partner and group activities. Additionally, a math enrichment program is offered to all students to reinforce concepts and problem solving strategies.

Science/Social Studies
The science program focuses on the study of soils. Students explore this topic in depth through the use of hands-on material. Mini-units throughout the year include the study of the solar system, Polar Regions, frogs and toads, and insects.

The social studies program encompasses such topics as map skills, the family, community and the working world, the earth (geography), discovering our past and learning about people, places and holidays. As these topics are explored through reading and hands-on activities, the development of critical thinking and study skills are emphasized. Our daily curriculum is enhanced by several field trips that are taken throughout the year to see local performances and visit museums.

"The best thing about second grade is learning and sharing. We get to learn many new things about our friends that we never knew before."
