Second Grade Judaic Studies

Hebrew Language Arts
The core of the language curriculum is the Tal Sela Hebrew Language Arts program. Second graders work toward developing fluency in reading, increase their active and passive vocabularies and become more comfortable expressing themselves in Hebrew. They learn to construct sentences, answer oral and written comprehension questions, and write simple compositions. Basic grammatical forms, present and past tense verb forms, and correct syntax are introduced. Early in the year, students begin to read and write in script. Reading material is gathered from the Tal Sela program, as well as a number of other sources.

Torah Study
The structure of the Humash is introduced. Students become acquainted with the divisions of the text into books, weekly portions, chapters, and verses. The narrative portions of the text from the Creation to the death of Moses are presented in simple Hebrew. Selected vocabulary and verses in the original Biblical Hebrew are read and illustrated by the students. Emphasis is placed on deriving meaning from the text and understanding the ethical lesson to be learned. Art, drama, music and dance enhance the lessons.

Holidays
Students learn the vocabulary, historical background, blessings and prayers associated with each Jewish holiday. Customs and traditions are learned and experienced. Crafts, songs, dances, and stories add to the anticipation and joy as the holiday approaches.

Prayer
We build on the foundation established in first grade by adding more complex prayers from the Shacharit service. The children are introduced to the background and main ideas of the prayers in order to make T'fillah a personally meaningful experience. Blessings before eating, selections from grace after meals, and blessings connected to holiday celebrations and special events are taught.

Israel
Throughout the year students maintain a connection to and appreciation for Israel. Prior to the celebration of Israel Independence Day, students are immersed in a unit of study about Israel that is part of the Tal Sela language program. Students learn about Israel's flag and country symbol, and they learn to sing the national anthem. Stories are read about life in Israel and Israeli dances and songs are an important part of the curriculum.
